The covers are stunning, Valerie. I can't thank you enough! Your covers always blow me away and Southern Comfort is no exception.

SO true, Valerie! I hate it when people assume that just because they can use the technology, that it makes them a cover artist/designer/writer... I mean, being able to pick up a paint brush doesn't make you Renoir or Picasso!! Get real!

That's true, the cover would be a business expense and would be tax deductable, so a good chance you would get a good quantity back from the money you outlay, the most expensive I've seen for a cover is $300, and that was mainly because the cover artist files for copyright and a commercial use license for the author.

Some artists, can justify those big prices, because it could be just as you said, they hire models and do photography sessions. Or are a graphic designer and don't use stock images and make their own images.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting.

Bottom line, spending money on a cover will help sell your book. If you have to pay for it out of pocket - you can write it off on your taxes. And who couldn't use a tax deduction? :)

My day job is as a proofreader/graphic designer at a newspaper, so I have a good idea how much goes into creating a design. Money - and possibly hours of time searching - for the right stock photography, sometimes hours or even days of playing with images and text to try to get that visual in your head onto the page. Just like with a book, it is impossible to guess how much time went into the finished product. The goal is to make it look easy because the best designs can be the most simple and have the most appeal. That 10K novella or ebook cover design probably took way more time than the average person would guess.

I also know that the cover Valerie did for me for Insatiable has gotten more rave comments than any of my other covers. I don't doubt it's selling more books than I would have otherwise.

I would love to see what a $2.00 cover looks like because you can't even buy any images for that amount of money from any of the stock photo places online...how insulting...guess that author doesn't realize that the cover is their first impression to a potential reader...lol

Wild. I've seen covers that looked like they were made for $2.00 because they totally sucked. A good cover is worth a lot (how many people stop to read a blurb because the cover attracts their eye? I know I do) and the skill of a good artist makes a huge difference. Not to mention, why shouldn't an artist get paid for their work, in the same way that an author should get paid for theirs? Esp if they have to cover the cost of an image out of their own pockets. To the woman who wanted to make her own cover, I say 'go for it, and we will all laugh at you and it when your book totally fails'. Maybe she will learn from her mistakes and come to understand that most times you really do get what you pay for. Great post Valerie!

Wow. I'm stunned. Cover artists are way too taken for granted as it is -- and to say you can do your own art -- the same as a artist -- for 2 bucks? Wow. I mean, come on. I can use crayons too, doesn't make me Picasso. What a shame to think this way. I hope she re-thinks her ideas now that you've laid everything out so nicely for her.

Hugs!
