Mari Carr has a new release today! Woo hoo!

Slam Dunk

Who says you can only score on the court?

A story from the Black & White Collection.

Trey Donovan is mourning the end of summer with fellow teachers when Ellie Hunter walks into Tully’s Bar. Better yet, she’s now a former rival basketball coach and the newest science teacher at his high school. He can’t think of anyone better to fill the vacant assistant coach job. In fact, if he plays his cards right, she might end up his perfect match off the court, too.

If she stops holding him at arm’s length long enough to give him a chance.

Coming off a year of bad decisions that not only broke her heart, but cost her a job, Ellie has good reason to swear off workplace romances. Her undeniable—and undeniably mutual—attraction to Trey is a serious threat to her resolve. Especially since Trey’s too-easy capitulation to her boundaries stings just a little too much.

Funny thing, though. When she sees Trey dancing with someone else, the edges of her vision turn decidedly green. And when another man tries to kiss Ellie, Trey sees red.

Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to fudge the rules. Just a little. After all, casual sex doesn’t count. Right?

My friend Mari Carr has a new release today! Wheee!

Party Naked

Mari Carr

Cocktales, Book One

Stephanie Harper is perfectly happy co-owning Books and Brew, where she slings drinks and entertains her friends with cutting wit and a cynical take on love. She’s convinced she has no time for anything deeper than sex; she has a business to run, after all. And her thrice-married mother has proven happy every after doesn’t exist.

Jarod Nolan begs to differ. Chance has him running into Steph—and giving her a ticket—one morning, but it’s fate that finds him in her place of business that same evening. A sizzling one-night stand ensues, and although Stephanie escapes before he wakes the next morning, Jarod is already sure she’s worth the chase.

Steph’s more than willing to party naked with the hot cop, but she’s adamant they’re driven by lust, not love. Jarod is prepared to prove otherwise, even if it means giving up one of the things he and Stephanie do best…

What’s that old saying? Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder?

When Fear Crosses The Line

At first, the mysterious emails are flattering. But soon, Gracie Baron can’t deny she has a stalker—and it’s clear she needs protection…

Into Pure Pleasure

P.I. Wade Harrison admits that his friend’s luscious assistant, Gracie, has been tantalizing him for months. So Wade jumps at the chance to offer her the personal protection she needs, free of charge. The only catch is, Gracie must agree to obey his orders—no questions asked.

The Answer Is Yes

Once Wade has Gracie alone, he isn’t shy about letting her know what he wants. His fantasies involve erotic toys and a very willing partner—and that’s just for starters. Gracie doesn’t know what she wants, but Wade is hot and restless—and surrendering to his desires may be exactly what she needs…

I recently came across a blog post by an author who complained about getting a cover designed for $1,000. Then she went on to say that she could make her own cover for $2.00.

My first thought was, good for you. I’m sure you and your $2.00 cover will be very happy. Too bad you’ll never be able to use it for print or to get any promotional material made because you’ve used very low resolution images. But hey, whatever floats your boat. You get what you pay for.

As a member of the cover artist community, I must say that $1,000 is excessive. As much as I’d LOVE to charge $1,000 for a cover, that’s not realistic, especially as a freelance artist who mainly does e-book covers.

However, keep in mind that if they are using exclusive photos (i.e. they have their own photography studio), it’s possible they feel they need to charge that much to recoup their investment. Or if they get their images from a certain vendor (which I won’t name because their prices are ridiculous), they may have to pay for an additional license fee to get the print rights.

I know several cover artists who don’t charge anywhere near that much, and can still do amazing work. If we can’t do the job, we more than likely know someone who can for a reasonable price. And most of us are willing to negotiate a fair price if it means repeat business or referrals. Most – and there are exceptions – cover artists use commercially available stock photos. We pay for those photos out of our own pockets. We expect to be reimbursed for that expense at some point by the client. We also expect to be compensated for our time. Just like you do.

Thinking you can get a cover made for $2.00 is an insult to everyone involved in a cover. Would you sell your manuscript for $2.00? Unlikely. How many hours went into your work? Did you go to school to learn your craft? Did you get training? What kind of value to you place on your work?

Don’t undervalue ours.

Ah, the equally dreaded and equally beloved holiday. When I was single I despised this holiday because it just amplified the fact that I was alone. When I got married, I loved it. The first year. The subsequent years of marriage has diminished the overwhelming romantic element of it. Why? Because I love my husband. I don’t need a date on the calendar to force me to show him. I show him every day. I tell him every day. And isn’t that better than a once a year grand gesture? I think so.

So, hug your loved one… If you don’t have one, hug yourself. Like the commercial says: Because you’re worth it.

What about you? What are your feelings on the holiday?
